Is CBD Safe for My Pet?
Like looking into the eyes of an elephant, or seeing a giraffe kid ecstatic to see his mother, there are times when we can see remarkable similarities between humans and animals. An astonishing amount of these likenesses have to do with the way our bodies process treatments for conditions.
Increasingly, people have been asking whether CBD is safe for their pets. The answer is that CBD is indeed safe for cats, dogs, and other companion animals. However, there are special considerations to keep in mind when choosing a product for your fur baby.
The good news is, pets can benefit from CBD in much the same way humans do. Almost all animals have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) that is responsible for maintaining homeostasis or balance within the body – including regulation of the communication between cells, immune response, and autonomic functions like appetite, sleep, and metabolism. Basically, the ECS helps the body maintain itself.
This chemical communication system includes CB1 receptors, mostly found in the brain, and CB2 receptors found all over the body, including in the gut and immune cells.
It is no wonder that thousands of pet parents are turning to CBD to tend to their pets’ conditions, including arthritis, fear, anxiety, stress, seizures, GI disorders, inflammation, chronic pain, and even cancer. Animals, however, can be very sensitive to certain cannabinoids.
Dr. Robert Silver, one of the leading experts and writer of “Medical Marijuana and Your Pet,” stated that it was experiments on dogs, conducted in the 1970’s, which helped the medical community understand the endocannabinoid system. They found that dogs, compared with all of the other species studied, possess the greatest number of endocannabinoid receptors in their brains. These receptors reign influence coordination and essential functions like heart rate and respiration.
Because of this superior concentration of endocannabinoid receptors in the brain, dogs are highly sensitive to THC. If they ingest too much of it, they can suffer a serious negative reaction that impacts their motor functions.
It’s important to note that products can be marketed as “THC-Free” as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC. This low amount still may be too high for our THC-sensitive fur friends. That is one of the reasons that we at CBD Livity take care to make sure all of our products are animal friendly. We guarantee that there is no trace amount of THC that will be damaging to your beloved pet family.
There is still research being conducted on CBD’s effect on animals, but a multitude of pet parents have reported positive results, not unlike that which humans experience. It is not hard to see why so many people are excited to try this wonderful natural solution.
